Bladderwrack refers to brown algae that are found on the northern Atlantic and the pacific coasts of United States. The bladderwrack stem is known as thallus and can be employed medicinally. The bladders are air filled pods and hence this algae floats. The bladderwrack is also called kelp. Bladderwrack thallus is useful in soothing inflamed and irritated tissues. This is also used historically as a laxative. It is also observed that people residing adjacent to seas or oceans have low rate of hypothyroidism owing to iodine rich food and seaweeds such as bladderwrack. Bladderwrack is also useful in countering obesity as it stimulated the thyroid gland. Seaweeds such as bladderwrack assist in losing weight. Three active constituents are alginic acid, iodine and fucoidan. Bladderwrack is safe and has potential problems in consuming such as thyroid dysfunction, heavy metal contamination and acne. As bladderwrack is another type of seaweed it has excessive iodine and consuming excessive iodine results in health problems.

Irish Moss- The North Atlantic seaweed Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus) has made its way in health care, cosmetics, and food industry due to its versatile therapeutic properties. Also called as Pearl Moss, this edible seaweed was used extensively by the Irish in the nineteenth century during famine. It acts as a skin softener nourishing and turning dry, rough, patchy skin into smooth, silky, skin thus protecting it from environmental elements. The efficiency of Irish Moss in treating duodenal and peptic cancers, cancer and radiation poisoning, obesity and cholesterol build up is being studied. Irish Moss causes an anticoagulant effect on the blood and is believed to clear up bladder complaints. The sea weed is also a good source of calcium, sodium, iodine, and magnesium that are vital for normal thyroid function.
L-Tyrosine, a non-essential amino acid that is used to build protein. It is a precursor dopamine, as well as a precursor to norepinephrine and epinephrine. The body makes L-Tyrosine from the amino acid phenylalanine. Since L-Tyrosine is a precursor of Dopamine, it may raise mental alertness, making it of great use in exercise programs.

Stearic Acid is a saturated fatty acid that occurs in many animal and vegetable fats and oils. Stearic acid is useful as an ingredient in making candles, soaps, plastics, oil pastels and cosmetics, and for softening rubber. Stearic acid is used to harden soaps, particularly those made with vegetable oil. Even though stearic acid is a saturated fat, studies have suggested that it has little effect on blood cholesterol levels, because such a high proportion is converted to oleic acid.
